Saturday, 25 February 2017 we saw once again great chess from our students. The Rapid Chess Tournaments helps them to get game time and its the first face of the practical examination. This is the tool to test them against their peers at the Academy.
We had 3 sections:
1. Open Section.
2. Primary Section.
3. Pawn Chess Section - Only for Total beginners.
In the open section Fide Master Dante Beukes reign supreme by scoring perfect with 5/5. This performance spells what is coming for the year ahead. Dante was followed in 2nd place by Philip Mootseng who scored 3/5. Matjiua Kajovi came 3rd with 3/5 as well. He was separated from Philip with the Median Buchholz tie-break.
FM Dante Beukes Winner Open Section |
Pena Tjipueja Winner Primary Section |
Andrea Nambahu Winner Pawn Chess |
The Primary section saw a new star in Penanjambi Tjipueja. Pena as we call her scored 4/5 and took 1st place and the gold medal home. In second place was WCM Jamie-Nicole Beukes who also scored 4/5 but had to content with the silver medal. Thomas Prybylski showed great fighting spirit and came in 3rd also with 4/5. The only way we could split the first 3 players was the progressive score tie-break where Pena had 14 point, Jamie 13 and Thomas 12. The girls dominated the Primary School section. A sign that gender does not make a difference, but equal opportunity and hard work does.
Pawn Chess is a variant of chess where the players only play with the pawns and whoever reaches the other side of the chessboard first with a pawn are declared a winner. We started with this section last year and decided to have it again this year. The total beginners played in this section and once again a girl dominated. Andrea Nambahu scored 4/5 and took home the gold medal for the pawn chess section. She was followed by another newcomer Elijah De Klerk with 4/5 in second place and the silver medalist. Once again only the Progressive tie-break separated the 2 with Andrea scoring 14 and Elijah 12. In third place taking home the bronze medal was Joshual M. Nitzborn scoring only 3/5. All three of the kiddies won their first medals in chess and they were very excited.
Finally, thank you to all participants and parents for spending the day with us. It was awesome.
