Xenophone Julius, Best scholar, Goodwill Khoa overall 4th at Kehat Beukes Memorial 2009

This weekend 26-27 December 2009, the 4th Kehat Beukes Memorial Chess Tournament was held at Klein Windhoek Guest House. The event was sponsored by Klein Windhoek Guest House and the Beukes Family and Friends. National Chess Champion Charles Eichab won the event for a second time with 5.5/7 followed by Toivo Nangula in 2nd place also with 5.5/7.
Chipande Ingwe came 3rd with 5/7 followed by Goodwill Khoa in 4th place also with 5/7. Worth mentioning is the performance of Toivo Nangula, Chipande Ingwe who each wrestled a point from Candidate Master Otto Nakapunda and Goodwill Khoa who checkmated Candidate Master Charles Eichab in the final round.

On the scholar side it was a horse race between Xenophone Julius and Calvin Eixab. However, Julius proofed that he
is the better player after he defeated Eixab in their final round encounter. For his effort Julius walked away with N$500.00 and Eixab got N$ 300.00 for second place. Abigail Julius the only girl was the third best scholar. She is defintely a candidate for the chess olympics in the near future.

Goodwill Khoa is the junior coach at TWCA and Xenophone and Abigail Julius are both students at The Weekend Chess Academy. With that we can only confirm that the chess lessons are helping.
Total prize fund was N$5,000.00 and was split as follows.

Open Section:
1st Prize - Charles Eichab = N$1,700.00+Two nights at the Guest House.

The more you practise and study chess the more victories you will have which will be converted to emosional currency hapiness and fun.

TWCA students participate against South Africa top schools and score points

The Namibia National Junior School Chess team participated at their maiden international chess match on 26 August 2009. The invitation came from the Primary School MenloPark who plans to visit Namibia Next year 2010. Three students from TWCA , Julian, Jack and Nicola were part of the team that went to South Africa.

Four School teams participated and Namibia came third. The Namibian Team was lead by Jossel Hindjou as head of the delegation. He was assisted by National Chess Coach Charles Eichab and Mr. Hamukweya. The NSSU and the Namibia Chess Federation joined hands to select the team at several qualifying events which was held earlier this year.

"Mrs Annamarie Hechter of the LS Menlopark made all arrangements with the team from Namibia, regarding their visit to SA, the chess event as well as sight-seeing in Pretoria and accommodating the group. On the 26 Aug all the participating school teams and the Namibian guests were treated with typical Pretorian hospitality by especially the Laerskool Menlopark, the Principal and staff who really went out of their way to entertain the Namibian guests.

The day started with a formal opening ceremony where the national anthems of Namibia and South Africa were played and the respective countries' flags hoisted. Formal and informal photos were taken. Refreshments for both officials and players were plentiful and the players were treated to memorabilia and gifts in every round! The hall and playing tables were exquisitely decorated with flags and everything nice, including notation pads and pens. The boards and pieces were supplied by Telkom for the day; every team supplied their own chess timers."

In the picture is the Namibian team during their trip in the NSSU colors. Congratulations on the entire team for their result.

Nicola Tjaronda, blazed through high school boys and girls to tie for first in Namibia National School Team Selection Chess Tournament!

The NSSU and the NCF held a team selection chess tournament to participate against South Africa.

13 regions have been invited as well as the qualifiers of the Bank Windhoek Open Chess Championships, However only 6 of the 13 regions took part with 63 participants.
We know that Namibia’s got talent it’s just a matter of resources and time before we conquer the chess world.

Why do we say this: Nicola Tjaronda only 10 yrs of age with 1½ years of chess training at TWCA defeated three high school boys and drew with two? She completely dominated the girls in their encounters. Her victories were against, Victor Nangombe, Patricia Teek, Lishen Mentile, Paulus Shituna, and Calvin Eichab. She drew against Julian Isaak and Eric Namaseb after she outplayed the young lads. She did not lose a single game and came third with 6/7, due to a lower progressive score. Nicola is the School Girls Champion 2009.

It’s the first time that we saw a girl who is not afraid to play against boys. She remained focused throughout the chess tournament and played attacking chess like a genius. Her beautiful encounter against Calvin Eichab displayed Grandmaster technique. She is a definite talent and the Coach Josef Nitzborn promise to teach her more good stuff to rake in more victories. Many of the spectators though that she was a boy when she played, only to realise that she is just a little girl with a big heart and lots of talent.

The overall winner of the National School Team Selection Chess Tournament was Hange Tjingaete a learner at Academia and chess student at The Zandell Chess Academy with a score of 6/7. Hange fought off Julian Isaak in their round 6 encounter which ended in a draw. He however could not convert a slight advantage in round 7 against Melvin Indongo and had to accept a draw. In second position was Julian Isaak with 6/7. Julian another gem from TWCA had to admit that Nicola was in top form and he had to fight hard to rescue a lost game. In third position came Nicola also with 6/7 and she was clearly the player of the chess tournament with a phenomenal rating performance of 1745 according to the pairing system Swiss perfect.

Ten (10) learners qualified for the encounter against South Africa. They are as follows:
Hange Tjingaete, Julian Isaak, Nicola Tjaronda, Melvin Indongo, Eric Namaseb, Calvin Eichab, Uukelo Titus, Dantago Boois, Lishen Mentile and Jack Tjaronda.

There are also 5 reserves in the event that any of the 10 qualifiers won’t be able to make it. They are, Mitch Nitzborn, James Indongo, Kiiga Angula, Paulinus Shilombuleni and Israel Shikongo.

The Namibian Team is ready to participate in South Africa and will be further coached by National Chess Coach Charles Eichab.

Why teach chess in schools? “Chess is a means to achieve educational excellence; a teaching tool identified by the principle of ‘learning to think’; an alternative for the development of thinking skills and processes; an opportunity for the development of character; and finally a way through which the virtuous habits and patterns of character help to integrate students in the public sphere of their adult lives and in particular in the professional world”
